What is Sandtray Therapy?

Sandtray Therapy is hands-on-psychological work.  It is a creative, non-verbal process which uses sand and miniature objects to express our inner world.  Jungian analysts popularized the technique as a window into our unconscious mind.  This process, done alongside talk therapy, engages our right brain and intuitive processes.  It often allows for the discovery of new, unrealized parts of ourselves, new creative expression, and emotional regulation.  Sandtray is helpful regardless of age, and is especially effective in working with adults.

Sandtray is helpful for people desiring to:

  • Work through issues but hesitant to verbalize them directly
  • Take a break from overactive left-brain thinking
  • Reclaim a sense of play in their adult lives
  • Discover how symbols and metaphor can offer new insight
It is in playing and only in playing that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self.
